John Winters spent 24 years in the newspaper industry.  He was an award-winning investigative reporter nominated three times for the nation’s highest journalism award, the Pulitzer Prize.  He later became a bureau chief in Washington, D.C., publisher of a daily newspaper and director of a national news service.

John grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He later attended boarding school at The Lawrenceville School in Lawrenceville, New Jersey.  He attended Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he was graduated with bachelors’ degrees in American History and Journalism.

He started his journalism career with The Augusta (Georgia) Chronicle, where he covered government. He later began covering the Energy Department’s nuclear weapons materials production facilities, primarily the Savannah River Site.  His newspaper nominated him three times for the Pulitzer for his coverage of the nuclear weapons complex.

After eight years in Georgia, John spent three years in Washington, D.C. as a bureau chief.  He was promoted to publisher of the Juneau (Alaska) Empire, where he stayed for five years.  He then spent two years in Nebraska, where he was general manager of The Grand Island (Nebraska) Independent.  After that, he spent five years as director of a national news service that included more than 30 newspapers across the country.

John resides in Georgia. He is married to the Little Black Dress, also known as the former Corby Beth Carlin.  Together, they are raising the Sons of Thunder, who are sometimes called Caleb, Seth and Levi.

When he’s not writing, John dreams of being back in Alaska fly fishing. He also practices his putting and continues to look for the perfect old pickup truck.  He also backpacks with the Sons and if they are lucky, The Dress joins them.
